What is the waiting time for a theory test?

Waiting times vary between theory test centres. You may need to wait up to three months before you get an appointment.

Car

You need to travel to the test centre by bus or train. There is a nearby parking facility at Heywood's Court, but it costs £1.40 an hour. It takes about three minutes to walk there.

Bus

Arriving at Newcastle upon Tyne Theory Test Centre

Public transport is great if you want to travel around without driving. You can go anywhere by bus, train or metro. There are many stops near the theory test centre. If you arrive at Newcastle train station, you can walk 4 minutes to the test centre. If you come by bus, you can get off at either Grey Street bus stop or High Level Bridge North end bus stop. From both places, it will take you 2 minutes to get to the test centre. For those using the metro, you can get off the train at the Central Station stop and then walk 4 minutes to the centre.

You should leave enough time to arrive at the test center. There are many parking options near the center, but if you drive, be prepared to park far away.

There are only 8 spaces available at Heywood's Court Car Park. You may need to arrive very early in the morning if you want to get one of those spots.

Your best bet, then, should be to go to the Dean Street carpark. There are 257 spaces available, and you'll be charged 3 pounds 20p for two hours of parking. Oh and it's only five minutes away from the test centre! Pass rates by year have been dipping slightly over the past few years, but are still well above the national average. Learners don't really need to stress too much about pass rates either as the test will be the same whatever place you take it. So focus more on getting yourself ready to pass!

Newcastle is a great place for a quick drink or a leisurely dinner. You can go to this bar if you want to try some creative beverages or eat some tasty snacks. This place is named after the guy who invented Newcastle Brown Ale.

Beluga is located right next to the test centre, so it's definitely worth visiting after taking the exam. The friendly staff and trendy décor make it perfect for a post-exam drink or three course meal. If the sun is shining, why not take advantage of their beautiful outdoor seating?

The Victoria Comet is a real pub with real ales, pub grubs and relaxed surroundings. This place is very popular among locals and tourists alike.

When you do not need a theory test

You don't need to take a theory exam before booking a driving test to upgrade your license. An automatic car license to a manual car license. From category A1 (small motorcycles) to category A2(medium motorcycles) if you've had the license for at least 2 years. From category C1 (medium vehicle) to category C (Large Vehicles) unless you got yourC1 entitlement from passing a Car Driving Test.

From minibus to bus. Any license to tow a trailer. You do NOT need to take a theory exam before booking a car.

Can I take my theory test online?

No. You must take the Theory Test at a Registered DVSA Theory Test Centre. Find a DVSA Theory Test Centre

What is the theory test pass mark?

To pass the theory test you must get at least 43/50 correct answers. To pass the hazard perception test you must get at lease 44/75 correct answers.

RESCHEDULING OR CANCELLING THE THEORY TEST

If you fail your theory test, you must reschedule within 3 weeks. Saturdays are included as working days.

ATTENDING THE THEORY TEST

All theory tests have pre-allocated times. Late arrivals may not be able t attend the test. You should bring your provisional driving license, passport and photocard driving license. If you do not have an old style driving licence, you need to take a valid passport as well.

You must be 18 years old to take this driving test. Your license should be valid for at least 12 months before taking the test. Contact the DVLA if you've lost your license or need a replacement.
