Using official RSA revision materials gives the best chance of passing first time. You can purchase learning portal subscriptions, books and CDs on the theory test website. Public libraries also stock this material.Contact your local public library to see if you can borrow these items.

Motorcycle and car tests

There are 40 questions in the first part of the test. You need 35 correct answers to pass the test. You have 45 minutes. TheoryTest.ie provides information about the test.

How the test works

The test is computerised and takes about 30 minutes to complete. It consists of a short tutorial and two practice questions. You must use a mouse and keyboard to answer the questions.

There are four types of questions: Multiple Choice (MC), Fill-in-the-Blank (FB), Short Answer (SA) and Long Essay (LE). MC questions require you to select the correct answer from among 4 options. FB questions ask you to fill in the blanks with words or phrases. SA questions give you a short passage to read and then ask you to write an essay about it. LE questions ask you to write a long essay.

Before you start

You must have lived in England for at least 185 days within the last year before taking your theory or driving test, and you must have been resident in England for at least 183 days within the last 3 years before taking your theory or motorcycle test.

When you do not need a theory test
