Car

You should park at Carlisle Street because it is cheaper than other nearby parking lots. It is about a 25-minute walk to the test center.

Bus

The nearest stop is Holgate park, within a minute‘s walk of the test center.

Train

The station is approximately a 21-minute walk to the test centre. The test centre is 1 mile away.

You need your: UK driving license number. email address. Credit or Debit Card.

Before you start

You must have lived in England for at least 185 days during the previous year before taking your theory or driving test, or else you'll be charged an extra £23. For car and motorcycle tests, you need to pass both parts of the test within the same time period. Hazard perception costs £11 per question.

When you do not need a theory test

You do not need to take any theory tests before booking a driving test to upgrade your license. From category A1 (small motorcycles) to category A2 if you've had the license for at least two years. From category C1 (medium vehicle) to category C if you passed a car driving test.

A minibus is a type of bus. Any license to tow a trailer. You do NOT need to take a theory exam before booking a minibus.

What is the theory test pass mark?

The pass mark for the car test is 86%, you need to get 43/50 correct answers to pass the test. To pass the hazard perception test, you need to score 44/75 right answers.

Can I take my theory test online?

No. You must take the Theory Test at a Registered DVSA Theory Test Centre. Find a DVSA Theory Test Centre

What is the waiting time for a theory test?

Waiting times vary between theory test centres. You should be aware of this before you go to your theory test centre.

Book a test to upgrade your licence

You must call the Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency (DVLA) if you need an upgrade test, such as automatic car, or medium-size lorry to a large truck. Call them on 0300 200 1122 Monday to Friday, 8am - 4pm. Find out about call costs.

When you do not need a theory test

You must usually pass your theory test before booking a tractor test. You do not need to take a theory test to book an automatic to manual conversion. You don't need to take a test to progress through the motorbike categories (progressive access) or to book a lorry or trailer. You need to take a bus and trailer test when you've got a bus license.

A medium lorry licence is needed before you can get a bus licence.

FINDING York THEORY TEST CENTRE

Train stations and bus stations are usually close to theory test centres. There should be signs to direct you to the nearest railway station or bus stop. You may also need to ask directions if you're lost.

BOOK A THEORY TEST AT York THEORY TEST CENTRE

To make a theory test booking, you'll need your provisional driving licence. Some details are needed from this. You can make a booking via one of the two ways listed below. The DVSA are responsible for managing all bookings and Pearson conduct the theory tests. While making a booking, be aware that help is available during the exam.

You can book a theory test by phone or online. The website shows all the available slots and dates. You can also call them directly.

AFTER YOU HAVE BOOKED YOUR TEST

The DVSA will email you confirmation of your theory date, time and reference code after completing booking. Check your junk email in case you didn't receive it. This email will confirm the theory test appointment and provide you with reference code. Although not essential to bring to the theory test centre it's advisable to print this email to show to the centre when any problems arise.

ATTENDING THE THEORY TEST

Remember to take along a printed copy of the email confirmation sent to you by DVSA on your test date. It's important you take along your photo card driving licence with you. You should also bring along your valid passport or other acceptable ID. If you don't have a passport, you need to get a new-style driving license and take this with you too.

You need to take your driving license to York Theory Test Centre. If you've lost or misplaced your license, call the DVLA who'll send you a replacement. Don't forget to bring your license when you arrive at York Theory Test Centre.
