Before you start
You must have lived in England for at least 185 days during the last year before taking your theory or driving test, and you must have been living there for at least 185 days before you took the test. You must also pass both parts of the test, and pay £23 for each part.
You must be over 18 years old to take this test. Please do not take any medicines before taking this test. Do not drink alcohol before taking this test. Have a cup of tea or coffee before taking this test.
When you do not need a theory test
You don't need to take a theory exam before booking a driving test to upgrade your license. An automatic vehicle license to a manual vehicle license. From category A1 (small motorcycles) to category A2(medium motorcycles) if you've had the license for at least two years. From category C1 (medium cars) to category C (Large vehicles) unless you passed a car driving test.
From minibus to bus. Any licence to tow a trailer. You do NOT need to take a theory exam before booking a minibus or bus.

ATTENDING THE THEORY TEST
Candidates should arrive early to avoid being turned away. Photocards are now optional.
You need a valid UK passport to take the test. If your license was lost or stolen, contact the DVLA.
