The best way to travel to the Kirkwall theory test centre is by car. There is plenty of parking available near the centre. If you are travelling by public transport, there are regular bus and coach services to Kirkwall. The theory test centre is located in the town centre, so it is easy to find.

When you arrive at the theory test centre, you will need to bring your photo ID and your theory test appointment confirmation email or letter. You will also need to pay the theory test fee before you can take the test.

ATTENDING THE THEORY TEST

There are plenty of on-site parking facilities available. You should allow yourself plenty of time to get to the centre. Late arrivals may be turned away.

Your provisional driving licence must be taken with you when you sit your theory test. You need a valid UK passport or other form of ID to take the test. If you lose your licence, contact the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) who will send you a new licence.

Book a test online

You must enter your full name, date of birth, gender, nationality, passport number, driving license number, email address, credit/debit card number, and security code.

When you do not need a theory test

You must pass a theory test before booking a driving test to upgrade your license. An automatic vehicle license is required to drive a medium or large vehicle.

A minibus must tow a trailer. You do NOT need to take a theory exam before booking a minibus.

Kirklands Road is about 23 minutes away from the test centre. There is no train service available.

You may reschedule your theory test for another day and time. Please give us at least 3 days' notice before you want to change the date and time. We'll do our best to accommodate your request.

AFTER YOU HAVE BOOKED YOUR TEST

Ensure you provide the correct email address whilst making your booking. The DVSA will send you a confirmation e-mail once you've completed the booking. Check your junk folder. The email will confirm the test booking details, date, address and give you a reference number. You should also bring a copy of your licence or driving permit to the test centre.

About the Driving Theory Test

The driving theory test is designed to consolidate your knowledge on a selection of topics relating to driving theory. This knowledge is vital for being safe and sensible on the roads, and to make sure that you are adequately prepared, the test is broken up into two parts.

First of all, there is a multiple-choice quiz, where candidates will answer questions about different aspects of driving theory. After that, there is a simulation of driving, where candidates will be asked to identify road hazards and react to them before they become a problem.

Taking the Test

Please make sure that you arrive 15 minutes early to the testing facility. The DVLA does not take kindly to late applicants, and has the right to automatically fail any candidate they consider to be breaking the rules.

Please make sure to put all of your belongings into a secure storage locker prior to entering the testing room. You are not permitted to bring anything with you into the room itself, and doing so will be considered cheating.

After the Test

Once the test has been completed, you will be given a piece of paper with your results on them. You will know automatically whether you have passed or failed the driving theory test, and your scores will also be detailed for you.
